Cover Letter这个东西，很多新手要么不重视，随便写两行就交了；要么太重视，写成了三页的“自我表扬信”。这两种都不对。
我带学生十几年，见过最离谱的Cover Letter写了四页，从小学获奖经历写到博士期间的志愿者活动。审稿人看了直接说“这人在干嘛”。
今天我把Cover Letter的写法拆开了讲清楚：它到底是干什么用的、怎么写才专业、有哪些坑千万别踩。
一、先搞清楚：Cover Letter是干什么用的？
很多人以为Cover Letter是“推销自己论文”的。不对。
Cover Letter只有一个核心作用：让编辑在30秒内决定“要不要往下看”。
编辑每天收到几十上百封投稿，没时间细读你的论文。他扫一眼Cover Letter，如果觉得“这个方向跟期刊对得上、格式也规矩”，才会点开正文看。
所以Cover Letter不需要花哨，不需要煽情，不需要表忠心。干净、清晰、专业，就够了。
二、一个标准Cover Letter只需要这5句话
我直接给你一个模板，你照着填就行：
Dear Editor,
We are submitting our manuscript entitled "[你的论文题目]" to [期刊名称] for consideration for publication.
In this study, we [一句话说清楚你做了什么、发现了什么]. For example: "we found that protein X regulates cell migration by activating pathway Y.
We confirm that this work is original, has not been published previously, and is not under consideration elsewhere. All authors have read and approved the manuscript.
We suggest the following reviewers for this manuscript: [名字1, 邮箱1, 单位1]; [名字2, 邮箱2, 单位2]; [名字3, 邮箱3, 单位3].
Thank you for considering our work.
Sincerely,
[你的名字]
[通讯作者的名字和联系方式]
就这么简单。一共5段，总字数不超过200个单词。
下面我把每一段的关键点拆开讲。
三、逐段拆解：每句话怎么写才专业？
第一段：我是谁、我要投哪
We are submitting our manuscript entitled "[论文题目]" to [期刊名称] for consideration for publication.
关键点：
期刊名称一定要写对。有人把“Journal of Materials Science”写成“Journal of Material Science”，编辑一看就知道你不仔细。
题目跟你投稿系统里填的要完全一致。
第二段：这篇论文做了什么（核心）
In this study, we found that protein X regulates cell migration by activating pathway Y.
这是Cover Letter里唯一需要花心思写的地方。一句话概括你的主要发现。
怎么写好这一句？
用主动语态：“we found that…” 而不是 “it was found that…”
只说最重要的1-2个发现，别说三个以上
不要太长，20个单词左右
几个例子：
好：
We found that compound A reduces tumor growth by 50% in mouse models.
也好：
Our data show that process B is 30% more efficient than the conventional method.
不好（太长、太啰嗦）：
In this study, we conducted a series of experiments to investigate the effect of various factors on the performance of the system, and after analyzing the results we discovered that under certain conditions the efficiency could be improved by approximately 30% compared to the traditional approach.
一个技巧：这一句就是你论文的“核心结论”，跟摘要的最后一句差不多。直接拿来用就行。
第三段：声明原创性（照抄就行）
We confirm that this work is original, has not been published previously, and is not under consideration elsewhere. All authors have read and approved the manuscript.
这段话几乎所有期刊都要求有。直接复制上面这句，把作者名字确认好就行。
注意：有些期刊还有额外要求，比如“所有作者没有利益冲突”。去期刊官网看“作者指南”，如果有就加上。
第四段：推荐审稿人（可选，但建议写）
We suggest the following reviewers for this manuscript:
Dr. John Smith, smith@university.edu, University of XXX
Prof. Mary Johnson, m.johnson@institute.com, Institute of YYY

推荐3-5个
从你参考文献的作者里选
不要全推荐中国人
不要推荐跟你同一个单位的人
邮箱一定要写对
一个小技巧：如果你知道有谁特别懂你这个方向，推荐他。但如果你推荐的人跟你有过合作或共事过，要说明，不然编辑会觉得你在“拉关系”。
第五段：客套话（照抄就行）
Thank you for considering our work.
Sincerely,
Dr. [名字]
就这么简单。不需要写“We look forward to your positive response”这种话，有点太舔了。
四、Cover Letter里千万别写的4样东西
1. 不要写“这篇论文非常重要”
错误示范：“This study is of great significance and will make a major contribution to the field.”
这种话编辑每天看一百遍，已经免疫了。你的论文重不重要，编辑自己会判断。你越夸，显得越不自信。
2. 不要写你的个人经历
错误示范：“I have been working on this topic for five years and have published 10 papers in this area.”
没人在乎。编辑只关心这篇论文本身，不关心你是谁。
3. 不要写你为什么要选这个期刊
错误示范：“We chose your journal because it has a high impact factor and a good reputation.”
这种话有点拍马屁拍到马蹄子上的感觉。你投这个期刊，当然是因为它好。不用说。
4. 不要超过一页
Cover Letter超过一页，说明你写太多了。一页纸足够。
五、三个特殊情况的处理方法
情况一：被拒后重投同一个期刊
如果之前被拒过，但编辑说“修改后可以重投”，那你需要在Cover Letter里说明。
多写一段：
This is a revised version of our manuscript originally submitted on [上次投稿日期]. We have carefully addressed all the reviewers' comments. A point-by-point response is attached.
同时附上一封回复信，逐条说明你改了哪里。
情况二：你不想让某个人审你的稿
有些系统里可以填“排除审稿人”。如果系统里没这个选项，你可以在Cover Letter里提一句：
We would like to request that Dr. [名字] not be included as a reviewer due to [理由，比如“ongoing unpublished collaboration”].
注意：理由要合理。不要写“这个人跟我们有竞争关系”这种话，太直白了。写“our groups are currently collaborating on an unpublished project”更专业。
情况三：你想推荐某个特定的审稿人
如果你知道谁特别懂你这个方向，可以在Cover Letter里特别说明一下：
Dr. [名字] from [单位] is an expert in [某个具体方法], which is central to our study. We believe he would be an appropriate reviewer.
这样写，编辑会觉得你很认真。
六、一个完整的好Cover Letter示例
我写一个完整的给你看，假设投的是一个材料类期刊：
Dear Editor,
We are submitting our manuscript entitled "Enhanced photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanoparticles through nitrogen doping" to the Journal of Materials Chemistry A for consideration for publication.
In this study, we demonstrate that nitrogen-doped TiO2 nanoparticles achieve a 2.5-fold higher photocatalytic degradation rate compared to undoped TiO2 under visible light.
We confirm that this work is original, has not been published previously, and is not under consideration elsewhere. All authors have read and approved the manuscript.
We suggest the following reviewers:
Prof. Xiaoming Wang, wangxm@tsinghua.edu.cn, Tsinghua University

七、几个关于Cover Letter的数据
我统计了一下我学生的投稿记录，发现一个规律：
Cover Letter类型 | 占比 | 初审通过率 |

写得太长（超过一页） | 15% | 约40% |
有严重错误（期刊名写错等） | 5% | 不到10% |
关键结论：Cover Letter写得太长或者有错误，初审通过率会明显下降。写规范了，就已经超过了大多数人。
最后说几句
Cover Letter这件事，你不需要创新，不需要出彩，只需要不出错。
编辑看Cover Letter就像安检员看行李——他只想快速确认“没问题”，而不是“好惊喜”。
所以：
用模板，别自己发明
写短，别写长
检查三遍：期刊名、题目、作者名单
投出去之后就别想了
把精力留给论文本身。Cover Letter不值得你花超过一小时。
一个最后的建议：写完之后，找一个没看过你论文的人读一遍。如果他能在30秒内说清楚“这篇论文做了什么”，你的Cover Letter就合格了。
